Turns out this mix is super easy to make, too.  I found this recipe on Thriving Home Blog and the only thing I changed is I just cut a tiny bit of the sugar.

Otherwise, it’s just cocoa, sugar, flour, baking soda, and salt is all you need for the dry mix copycat and then you’re done!

Put it all in an airtight container and store it in your pantry where you would have stored a brownie box mix until the chocolate craving hits.

Then when you’re ready to make your deliciously fudgey brownies it’s just adding some butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Which if you haven’t done yet, making your own is sooo easy!  And way more affordable!

The result? Super duper fudgey brownies. Like ooey but not too gooey moist chocolate deliciousness.  Add some crushed walnuts for a little crunch or even some chocolate chips for extra gooey brownie delightfulness!  No matter how you make them, now you can have the ease of a boxed brownie mix at home but the taste of a from scratch brownie!

Enjoy!  As always, if you make this recipe or any others – let me know what you think and share it with me on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest; I love to see them!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 3/4 cup sugar

To Make Brownies From Mix

Instructions

  • Add all mix ingredients in a bowl and combine well.  Store in an airtight container until you're ready to use!

To Make the Brownies from Mix

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9 X 13 pan.
  • Beat together butter, eggs, and vanilla. Add to dry mix and mix well until all incorporated.
  • Pour mixture into pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes.  Test with a toothpick to ensure center is cooked - sometimes it takes a bit longer (I had one batch that needed a little over 40 mins). But the general texture of these brownies are fudgey, not cakey.  Enjoy!

  • Am I correct in assuming that 1 cup (8 oz) of butter is 1/2 lb (8 oz). To me, cup is quantity and lb is weight. It could make quite a difference.
    Thank you,

I think this would make the perfect “hostess” gift, and I know just the person to make this for. What a fun idea. I love brownies. I bet they taste way better than “stuff out of the box” too.

I’m totally with you on wanting to get rid of box mixes and replace them with homemade versions. What a great idea to have on hand for quick treats or fun gifts for people! Put the brownie mix in a cute jar with the recipe attached and that would be perfect for Christmas and other holidays.

  • This is awesome! It would be perfect for just making a few brownies. We almost never bake because I don’t want all those goodies laying around. My toddler would LOVE having this stuff on hand for winter days inside too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Ok why have I not been making this recipe my entire adult life? And why have I not been giving these out as Christmas presents? Every year, I make edible gifts for people and will be adding these to the list this year. Can’t wait! These are brilliant, Tracy…thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ™‚

What a fantastic idea to make up your own brownie mix. I know of so many times I’ve wanted to make brownies and I don’t have a mix. Or, even worse I have a box stuck in the back of the pantry that’s outdated by several years. NOT good to use. I think the brownie mix would also be good to give as a gift. I love this idea. I know of someone who’d really appreciate this. I think I”ll make up some brownies PLUS give the mix to her as a gift.

HECK YES PLEASE. The last time I made brownies, I messed up royally. Mostly because it was a bit of an oddball recipe and I don’t bake much and I swapped an ingredient I shouldn’t have. (Science fail!) So I’m just going to go ahead and stick to this recipe ๐Ÿ˜‰ Ooey gooey chocolatey perfection. I know I can always count on you for awesome from-scratch recipes.
