Copycat Old Bay Seasoning

Skip the store bought and make your own version of this classic spice blend!

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons celery salt .85 oz
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons smoke paprika .75 oz
  • 2 teaspoons ground mustard .2 oz
  • 3/4 teaspoon cayenne .5 oz
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground bay leaves about 3 large dried bay leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cardamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon all spice

Instructions

  • Grind Bay Leaves: Add the bay leaves to a mortar or to a spice blender and crush with a pestle or blend until the leaves are ground.
  • Mix: Add all of the spices to a small bowl and mix well.
  • Store: Store in a small jar with the rest of your herbs and spices!

Notes

Storage
Store in an airtight container for up to 1 year!
Substitutions
Celery Salt: In place of celery salt, you can use 2 teaspoons of kosher salt and 1 teaspoon of celery seed, ground with a mortar and pestle or in a spice grinder.
Paprika: Regular paprika works in this blend too, although we do love the added smokiness that smoked paprika adds.
Cayenne: This amount of cayenne adds just the right amount of heat, in my opinion. You can, of course, add a bit more for more kick!
