We love recreating a store staple in this house, and spice blends are one of the easiest ways to not only add a little from scratch flair to your cooking, but also eliminate extra, unnecessary ingredients and control exactly what’s in your blend! Our Copycat Old Bay Seasoning is our latest spice blend recreation, and it is for sure one we’ll be making on repeat!

Ingredients Needed

an overhead of open small mason jars with ground spices, all labeled, and a small bowl of dried bay leaves.
  • Celery Salt and Smoked Paprika – The base spices for this blend, and they make a delicious duo combining earthy, grassy, salty, with another kind of earthy flavor that’s smoky, warm, and subtly sweet.
  • Ground Ginger, Black Pepper, and Ground Mustard – These three bring subtle citrus, slightly bitter, and sharp and pungent woody flavors altogether.
  • Cardamon, All Spice, Cloves, and Cinnamon – Just a teeny touch of these warming spices to add depth!
  • Ground Bay Leaves If you can find ground bay leaves in the store, great! If not, no problem, it just takes an extra minute to grind up some dried bay leaves.

Ready in Minutes

The first step is to create that ground bay by using a trusty mortar and pestle (or spice grinder) to grind up the bay leaves. For this recipe, 3 good-sized bay leaves gave us just enough.

Finally, add it all to a bowl and mix! That’s it!

Shrimp and seafood are what this classic spice blend is most often (and best) used on. We absolutely loved our Copycat Old Bay Seasoning on some simple sauteed shrimp in butter! It is also delicious to use in place of the spice blend for our 10 Minute Spicy Grilled Shrimp Skewers!

Notes

Storage
Store in an airtight container for up to 1 year!
Substitutions
Celery Salt: In place of celery salt, you can use 2 teaspoons of kosher salt and 1 teaspoon of celery seed, ground with a mortar and pestle or in a spice grinder.
Paprika: Regular paprika works in this blend too, although we do love the added smokiness that smoked paprika adds.
Cayenne: This amount of cayenne adds just the right amount of heat, in my opinion. You can, of course, add a bit more for more kick!
