Ingredients Needed
- Vietnamese Cinnamon - The base of our homemade pumpkin pie spice, and because of that, the quality of cinnamon matters! More on that below.
- Nutmeg - This nutty, earthy, slightly sweet spice is another key ingredient to this classic fall spice mix.
- Ground Ginger - This is one of my favorite spices. I use this in so many of our recipes!
- Ground Cloves - This leaves that warm lingering sweet, pungent flavor.
- All Spice - A little bitter, a little earthy, and just a touch fruity, it kind of tastes like many of the spices above, hence the "all" in the all spice name.
Also, while this may look like an ad for King Arthur, it's not. We just love their spices (and all of their products) so much!
What is Vietnamese Cinnamon?
Vietnamese Cinnamon (also known as Saigon Cinnamon) is a high-quality cinnamon because the Vietnamese cinnamon bark has the highest concentration of oils and therefore it has a much stronger flavor. Unlike the cinnamon (cassia) that you'll mostly find in the grocery store, cassia, Vietnamese Cinnamon is both sweet and a little spicy, which makes it the perfect cinnamon for our Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice.
While Vietnamese Cinnamon may be a bit more expensive, when it comes to making your own spice blends, what will truly make a difference is the quality of the spices that you use. If Vietnamese Cinnamon isn't an option, be sure that the spices you use are not expired, but also use a high-quality of the brand because not all cinnamon is made equal.
Easy to Make
The best part of making your own spice blends is how incredibly fast and easy they are to make. Just add it all to a bowl, and mix!
Add that Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice to a jar and you are ready to make all of your favorite fall spiced recipes with some added from scratch flair!
SO much flavor. Fall in a little adorable jar!
Recipe Tips
Whenever you're making your own spice blends, be sure that your spices have not expired. Once they have expired, while they definitely won't make you sick, they will potentially adjust a recipe because they won't be as potent as when they were fresher.
While most spices last about 1-4 years (when stored in a cool dry place), sometimes it's hard to know when that time has passed, especially if it's a spice that you use infrequently. To test whether your dried spices are still fresh, just rub a little in your hand and if after doing that the smell is not strong and feels like it's lacking, then it's likely not as fresh as it should be and won't be adding as much to your recipes as you'd hope for.
One of the best parts of making your own spice blends is being able to customize them! Want a bigger ginger profile? No problem, add more ginger! Need it to be earthier and nuttier? Add a little more nutmeg. You can test and try out different varieties to make it tailored to your own taste!
Be sure to store your spices right! While those spice racks are so handy, convenient, and pretty, if you're storing them close to your stovetop, then you're doing them a disservice! The heat will degrade those spices over time much faster than they should.
Bring on Fall, friends! Let our Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice kick it off, right!
