What is Tartar Sauce?

Tartar sauce is a staple condiment served with seafood. It’s believed to have originated in France and is made up of mayonnaise, pickles, lemon, and dill. This creamy and slightly tangy sauce is most often found with fried fish dishes like fish and chips, fried oysters, calamari, fish sticks, and fish sandwiches, but just like any condiment, it can be used in a variety of ways like a dip for vegetables or a tangy creamy addition to any sandwich.

Easy to Make

two bowls next to each other, one with mayo, sour cream, dill, pickles, and spices and mustard, and then it all mixed.

It takes literal minutes to whip up this Easy Homemade Tartar Sauce! Just add all of the ingredients into a bowl and then give it a good mix and you’re done!

The only thing that takes time is letting all the flavors meld together as it all cools in the fridge – which it should do for at least 30 minutes. This makes it a great condiment to make in advance and have on hand whenever you need it!

  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill
  • 1/4 cup dill pickle chopped, approximately 1 pickle spear
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Mix: Add all ingredients to a bowl and mix well.
  • Chill: Cover bowl and place it in the fridge to chill.
  • Serve with your favorite seafood dishes or store it in the fridge.

Notes

Storage
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, but this can also vary based on whether you used homemade mayonnaise and how long ago it was made.  Up to two weeks when using freshly made mayonnaise, less based on when the mayonnaise was made.
Don’t skip the chilling
This is a key step to develop the flavors.
Substitutions
Sour Cream: You can use all mayonnaise, too. We prefer the added tang from the sour cream, though.
Fresh Dill: If using dried dill, you can substitute 1 teaspoon of dried dill.
Dijon Mustard: You can also substitute a milder stone ground mustard.
