7 mason jars open with herbs and labeled.

Ingredients Needed

  • Basil – Is there anything more Italian than this sweet pungent herb?
  • Parsley – Another Italian classic, this clean “green” and earthy herb is an absolute staple in Italian cooking and seasonings.
  • Thyme – A member of the mint family, this herb adds a bit of citrus, floral, and woody notes.
  • Rosemary – As you can tell by our logo, this strong earthy woody herb is one of our favorites!
  • Oregano – This powerful, pungent, earthy, and also bitter herb packs a punch!
  • Sage – Fresh, earthy, slightly piney, but also fresh and slightly citrus, this is a delicate delightful addition.
  • Garlic Powder – While not always found in store-bought Italian seasoning blends, since we just love garlic so much (and it’s used so much in Italian cooking), we add it to ours to add more depth of flavor.

How to Store Dried Herbs and Seasonings

a small open mason jar with Italian seasoning.

Dried herbs and seasonings will last when stored properly for up to 2-3 years, but only when stored right. Here are some of the tips on how to store herbs and spices for ultimate shelf life.

Keep in a low-humidity place

Humidity (moisture in the air) is what promotes mold growth which can not only spoil your spices but can also be harmful to your health.

Keep out of the heat!

Heat will break down the chemical compounds of the herbs and spices which is what gives them their flavor, ultimately reducing the potency of the herb or spice.

Keep them AWAY from your stove!

Right next to your stove in one of those little spice racks, or even worse, right above your stove, is the worst place to store your herbs and spices! It’s subjecting them to both heat and humidity!

Keep out of sunlight

Sunlight will also start to break down the chemical compounds of the herbs and spices and reduce their potency. So keep those spice racks out of your bright kitchen window, too!

Where to Store Herbs and Spices

The absolute best place to store your herbs and spices is in a cool, dry place. Keep them away from heat, humidity, and sunlight for the freshest, longest-lasting herbs and spices. In all of our kitchens, even when we had teeny tiny ones with just a couple of drawers, we always dedicated one to a spice drawer for not only easy access but also to keep it all nice and fresh! We love using these little 4 oz mason jars with lid labels. for all of our herbs and spices.

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried parsley
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried sage
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  • Add everything to a small bowl and mix well.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 2-3 years in a cool dry place.

Notes

Storage
Dried herbs and spices should always be stored in a cool dry place to ensure that the potency and freshness will last the longest.
Substitutions
Garlic: Optional but it’s definitely a big part of Italian cooking and we think it adds a good depth of flavor.
Oregano: Can use all oregano or swap out some for some dried marjoram which is very similar but has some sweeter notes.
Can I use fresh herbs?
You can of course make a fresh herb blend, but it will not store the same as using dried herbs.  The conversion for using fresh to dried is 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs for every teaspoon of dried herbs, since dried is much more potent than fresh.
