Equipment

Ingredients

Sliders

Cheese Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons flour 34 g
  • 2 cups milk 2%
  • 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese shredded
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Instructions

  • Slice Rolls: Slice rolls in half and separate the bottom half from the top, lining the bottom in a large baking dish.
  • Layer the Sliders: Add 1/2 of the Gruyere cheese to the bread, then add a layer of sliced ham, and finish with the rest of the cheese. Add Dijon to the inside of the tops of the rolls and then place them back on top ham and cheese layered rolls.
  • Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Create Sauce: In a small saucepan add the butter and turn the heat to medium. Add the flour and whisk in the flour as the butter melts to create a roux. Once a thick slightly browned roux has formed, slowly add the milk, just a little bit at a time, whisking as you add and as it all is brought to a gentle boil.
Once all of the milk is incorporated, add the dijon, salt, pepper, thyme, and Parmesan cheese. Whisk to combine turn heat down to low and let simmer for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Add Sauce and Bake: Gently pour the sauce over the top of the rolls. Bake for 15-18 minutes until the cheese has melted and sauce has set.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Storage
Store these in the fridge for up to two days (although may differ if using leftover ham).
Reheat
We found that these are so good when reheated in a pan with butter and then pressed a little for a pressed grilled slider. Go wild and make some more fresh sauce to add on top!
Substitutions
Rolls: Hawaiian Rolls are really the best because of the sweetness of the rolls, but of course, you can use regular dinner rolls or your favorite store-bought. But if you haven't tried our Hawaiian Rolls yet, trust me, they make all the difference!
Ham: Use leftover holiday ham sliced thinly or thinly sliced deli ham.
Cheese:  You can use Swiss in place of gruyere and another hard cheese like romano or asiago in place of the Parmesan.  For the best melt, always shred your own!
Milk: 2% is our go-to, but you could use whole milk or even swap in some half-and-half for a much thicker richer sauce.
Dijon: Use your favorite style of mustard.
Make Ahead
Prep the sliders a day ahead, store the whole baking tray in the fridge, and cover with foil or plastic wrap. When ready, take the tray out of the fridge to bring it up to room temp and then make your sauce.
