Homemade Mint Milano Cookies
An iconic cookie, but made at home! Our copycat Homemade Mint Milano Cookies are SO delicious and are surprisingly easier than you might think to make from scratch!

It’s been way too long since I’ve baked something sweet for my studly husband and I was craving a cookie. So I asked him what type of cookie he was in the mood for. He thought for a second and then said, “I wonder if we can make Milano Cookies from scratch…” Psssh. Challenge accepted and our Homemade Mint Milano Cookies were born!
Ingredients Needed
- Flour – All-purpose is best, although a 1:1 gluten-free flour also works.
- Butter – Salted or Unsalted, works well.
- Egg – Just one is all you need!
- Granulated and Confectioner’s Sugar – Granulated for the cookie and confectioner’s to sweeten the chocolate center!
- Vanilla Extract – Have you made your own yet?
- Salt – Just a touch!
- Semi-Sweet Baker’s Chocolate – For the classic chocolatey center!
- Peppermint Extract – To add that classic mint flavor.
- Milk and Water – Just enough to loosen the chocolate center.
Tools for this Recipe
(Amazon affiliate links)- You can find all of my kitchen essentials here!
Hand Mixer – You can of course cream the butter and sugar together without one, but a mixer will make this a much easier and faster process!
Rimmed Baking Sheet – Or your favorite cookie sheet.
Large Bowls – We just love these bowls and use them for all of our baking needs.
Cooling Rack – To cool the cookies once they’re done. Kitchen Scale – This is one of our most used kitchen tools! Measuring flour and other dry ingredients is key for ensuring proper measurements.
Step-by-Step Instructions

Homemade Mint Milano Cookies
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 218 g
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar 103 g
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 large egg room temperature
- 4 ounces semisweet baker's chocolate
- 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar 90 g
- 1/4 teaspoon pure peppermint extract
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1-2 tablespoon water
Instructions
- Prep: Preheat oven to 325 degrees and add baking racks to two center racks. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Make Dough: In a medium sized bowl, add flour and salt and mix well. In a large bowl, add softened butter and sugar. With an electric hand mixer, beat butter and granulated sugar on high until light and fluffy about 4 minutes. Add egg and vanilla and beat until well combined.Slowly add the flour mixture and mix with a wooden spoon or a spatula until all of the flour is combined.
- Bake Cookies: On parchment-lined paper, create small oval doughs (think milano cookie shape!) and leave a little room for spreading. Bake 15 minutes, rotating the sheets halfway through at the 7 min mark. Transfer the cookies immediately to wire racks to cool.
- Create Chocolate Center: Melt chocolate in a double boiler by adding chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl set over (not in) a saucepan of simmering water. Stir until melted about 2 minutes. Add the confectioners' sugar, milk, water, and peppermint extract
- Fill Cookies: Take two cooled cookies. With a small spatula or table knife, spread chocolate on flat side of one cookie and then sandwich cookie halves together.
- Enjoy! Store in an airtight container in fridge for up to a week or on counter for up to 3 days.
