Bring on the comfort food! Can you ever go wrong with buttery toasted bread and melty cheese? The answer is a definitive no, and we have elevated this classic by adding some sweet, salty goodness and one of our absolute favorite sandwich breads! Our Hawaiian Grilled Cheese adds ham and pineapple for an incredibly delicious, next-level ham and cheese sandwich!

Ingredients Needed

a plate of sliced bread, deli ham, swiss cheese, sliced pineapple, butter, and dijon mustard.
  • Hawaiian Sandwich Bread – If you’re a bread baker, then trust me, this is a sandwich bread you need in your arsenal! It’s absolutely delicious for this Hawaiian Grilled Cheese, French toast, and any other sandwich you’d like to add a little subtle sweetness to.
  • Sliced Deli Ham – This is our everyday go-to for this recipe, but it’s also absolutely delicious with some leftover baked ham slices or even some slices of Canadian bacon!
  • Sliced Swiss Cheese – Swiss is our favorite, but cheddar, gruyere, and mozzarella are other delicious choices.
  • Pineapple – Fresh or canned, but cut into slices is best for the sandwich.
  • Butter – Key for that toasted buttery crust that every good grilled cheese requires.
  • Dijon Mustard – Just enough to tie it all together, but not to overpower the balance of the sweet pineapple and salty ham. BTW, have you made your own yet?

Easy to Make

Perfect for lunch or dinner, these sandwiches come together so quickly! Butter your bread for the outside, mustard it on the inside, and then layer with cheese, ham, pineapple, and more cheese.

Then fry in your favorite non-stick pan, like my new favorite, Caraway.

Low and Slow

The key to achieving the ultimate melty cheese without burning your bread is to go low and slow. Use low heat and allow enough time for the cheese to melt and the bread to brown, but not burn.

Once the bread is toasty and brown, and the cheese is melty and gooey, you have yourself a Hawaiian Grilled Cheese! Serve it with some Homemade Potato Chips for the ultimate comfort meal.

I mean, how can you go wrong with crisp,y buttery homemade bread with melty cheese, ham, and pineapple?? Plus, I love to use nice big slices of Swiss cheese that slightly overhang the bread. Then they’ll make crispy, delicious fried cheese edges around the bread. Yummm.

Notes

Substitutions
Hawaiian Bread: This grilled cheese is the perfect excuse to make our Hawaiian Sandwich Bread, but you can use any of your other favorites. Store-bought Hawaiian bread, our Easy White Sandwich Bread, or Como Bread are other delicious choices. If using homemade bread, we prefer a thicker slice of bread for these sandwiches.
Cheese: Swiss is our favorite, but mozzarella, cheddar, or gruyere would also be great. No matter what you choose, be sure to use very thinly sliced cheese or grate it yourself from a block. Preshredded cheese does not melt as well!
Ham: Deli ham, Canadian Bacon, or slices of leftover baked ham are all delicious!
Pro Tip
Let your cheese slices hang over the sides of the bread just a little bit – that way they’ll fry in the pan and crisp up to have some little crispy fried cheese edges around your bread.
