Croutons From Scratch

Take any salad to the next level with our Croutons From Scratch! Made with our homemade white bread and homemade Italian seasoning, these croutons will bring flavor, crunch, and from scratch flair to anything you add them to!

Be honest now, what do you think the best part of a salad is? Yes, yes we love all of the delicious veggies in a big ol’ salad, but let’s be honest, the best part is for sure when a salad comes with some big, crunchy, salty croutons. And let me tell you, making your own Croutons From Scratch, will take any salad or soup to the next level! Not only are they so incredibly easy to make, but also they’re a fabulous way to repurpose some stale bread!

Ingredients Needed

a bowl of cubed bread, olive oil, salt, and Italian seasoning all labeled.
  • Bread – These homemade croutons are a great way to use up some stale bread. Our go-to for these is some of our Easy White Sandwich Bread, but our Hawaiian Bread, Como Bread, and Rosemary Garlic Bread would also be delicious!
  • Olive Oil – You can also use butter, but we prefer oil for this to make them a bit healthier and the flavor of the oil and herbs are delicious together.
  • Italian Seasoning – Use your favorite, or make your own!
  • Salt – You can use fine ground, kosher, or specialty salt for these. We prefer to use some fresh ground Pink Himalayan salt for these Croutons From Scratch.

Oil and Season

Once you have your cubed stale bread ready, then it’s just a matter of oiling and seasoning. Add it all to a big bowl and mix well!

Pro Tip

Add the oil first to coat and then add the salt and seasonings so that it all will cling to the oiled bread. Also, use an extra large bowl for mixing to allow for plenty of space to turn the bread in the oil and seasonings.

Bake!

Add those seasoned bites of bready goodness to the oven and bake for about 15 minutes, giving them a little mix at the halfway mark.

Croutons From Scratch, done!

Customizable

One of the best parts of making your own Croutons From Scratch is that they are endlessly customizable! Instead of Italian seasoning, you can spice and herb them however you’d like. Some other great ideas are garlic powder, onion powder, basil, oregano, herbs de Provence, paprika, or just butter and salt.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 8 cups cubed stale bread 425 g, 1 inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Pink himalayan salt
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350℉ and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Season: Add the cubed bread to a large bowl, add olive oil and mix well. Add salt and Italian seasoning and mix well.
  • Bake: Add the tray to the middle rack of the oven and bake for 15 minutes, stirring after 7 minutes.
  • Enjoy: Add to your favorite salad or soup and enjoy!

Notes

Storage
Store in an airtight container or ziplock bag and store on the counter or at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
