Admittedly, this was a new one to me that was requested by my mom who loves a good ham salad and has now converted our whole family to it! Our Easy Ham Salad recipe is my take on this classic that has gotten two thumbs up approval from my ham salad lovin’ mom and from my two biggest critics, my kids!

Ingredients Needed

sliced cooked ham, mayo, celery, onion, parsley, Dijon Mustard, pepper, soy sauce, and sweet relish in bowls and labeled.
  • Ham – This recipe is a great way to use up some leftover ham, or you can of course buy some precooked ham from your local grocery store.
  • Mayonnaise – This is a mayo based salad which you can easily take to the next level by making your own mayonnaise from scratch!
  • Celery and Onion – Just enough for the fresh and zippy crunch.
  • Sweet Relish – We absolutely love this with our Zucchini Relish, but you can use your own favorite sweet relish of choice.
  • Dijon Mustard – Mustard and ham are just a match made in heaven and this adds a great little kick. It’s another great opportunity to add some from scratch flair with our homemade Dijon!
  • Low Sodium Soy Sauce – Now I know this isn’t found in a traditional ham salad, but that’s what makes this one unique! I just love the subtle umami depth that this lil’ touch of soy sauce adds. But because of the inherent saltiness of the ham, we use a low sodium soy sauce for this recipe.
  • Salt and Pepper – The ham and the soy sauce add a lot of salt on their own, so we just add a pinch of salt with the pepper.
  • Fresh Parsley – Just a tough to finish the salad with to tie it all together with a little herbal freshness.

Ready Fast

a bowl of ham, Dijon, celery, onion, mayonnaise, relish, pepper.

The best thing about this Easy Ham Salad, is that it’s exactly as it sounds. Easy! Literally just throw it all in a bowl and give it a good mix and you’re done!

Recipe Tips

Ground or Chopped Ham

A traditional ham salad will often be made with ground ham. You can of course use a meat grinder to accomplish this, but we find it easy, and just as delicious, to do a really fine chop of the ham instead.

Sweet Relish

We love to use our homemade zucchini relish for this ham salad recipe, but you can use your sweet relish of choice, or even some chopped sweet bread and butter pickles minced.

Customize!

Like I’ve said, this recipe is our take on this classic, and it’s of course endlessly customizable, too! Add more celery for more fresh crunch, add more relish to make it a bit sweeter, or add more Dijon to give it a little more mustard kick!

Make it a sandwich, slider, or a delish little appetizer or part of a snacky board meal. Here are some of our from scratch breads and crackers that this ham salad is delish with!

  1. We made this with bologna, although my mother optimistically called it “ham salad”. She used bologna, Miracle Whip and sweet relish. It wasn’t until I was in my 30s that I found out that ham salad could actually be (and indeed was) made from ham.

This is the perfect recipe to keep handy around the holidays or any day you have a spiral ham because there are usually leftovers.
The recipe is as delicious as it is versatile. A magnificent spread for crackers when company calls, and a midnight snack after they go home.

This is a great recipe, it would be a good spread for a hot bread in a morning and of course if you want it to be a snack by itself it is good too!
