Condiments from scratch! Our 5 Minute Homemade Ketchup is seriously one of the easiest condiments to make at home, and we love making ketchup like this because it doesn’t require any cooking and we always have what we need on hand!

Why You’ll Make This Again and Again

Making condiments from scratch is the easiest way to add some from scratch flair to your cooking! Most are ready fast and, like this 5 Minute Homemade Ketchup, they don’t require cooking. You’ll love this ketchup for that reason and:

  • It’s customizable! Unlike store-bought ketchups, you get to choose exactly what goes into this, and that includes spices! If you like it tangier, add a little more vinegar. Garlickier? You do you, boo!
  • FIVE Minutes. Truly, that’s all you need. And most of that time will be spent gathering ingredients!
  • No cooking required! We use canned tomato paste for this recipe to eliminate any cooking, and tomato paste is one of the few things I will opt to buy over making. We’ve made it before and honestly, it wasn’t worth it – the time and cost of tomatoes just made us realize that it’ll be one of the few things we buy.

Ingredients Needed

What is in homemade ketchup? Well, ours is just tomato paste, vinegar, and a load of spices. That ketchup from the store? It has high fructose corn syrup -completely unnecessary in my opinion!

  • Sugar – The ketchups you’ll find in the store have WAY more than this recipe and way more than needed, in my opinion!
  • Cayenne – Just a pinch to add the right amount of kick!
  • Celery salt – One of the most underused spices in my opinion!
  • Mustard powder – Earthy and pungent, just a little complements everything else in this ketchup.
  • Oregano – Just a touch to keep it savory!
  • Onion and Garlic powder – Duh.
  • All spice – Just a smidge!
  • Salt and Pepper – To taste!

Honestly, I think I spent most of that time finding the spices I wanted than doing anything else. Paired with some simple homemade fries and, well, there’s an iconic duo, ready to be served from scratch!

FAQs

How long will the ketchup last?

Kept in an airtight container in a fridge and it will last a month.

It tastes super vinegar-y.

Start small when you add the vinegar. You can always add a little more if you want a little more tang.

Can I use fresh oregano or garlic?

For the best texture and taste, dried works best for this recipe.

Consistency

This recipe makes for a thicker ketchup, which is what we prefer, but you can make it looser by either adding more vinegar (this will make it tangier) or by adding some water. Add a tablespoon at a time and then mix before adding more.

Enjoy! As always, if you make this recipe or any of my others, I love to hear what you think! Leave a comment below, email me, or you can find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest!

  • 10-12 oz. tomato paste

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery salt
  • pinch ground all spice

Instructions

  • Loosen Paste: In a large bowl add tomato paste and then add vinegar and whisk to loosen paste.
  • Season: Add the rest of ingredients and mix well.
  • Taste: Taste and add additional spices if desired.
  • Enjoy: Use as a side or condiment and store the rest in an airtight container in the fridge for a month.

Notes

Nutritional value is approximately based on 1 cup of ketchup.
Consistency
As written, this recipe makes a thicker ketchup. If you prefer it looser, add more liquid – either vinegar (if you want it tangier) or water.
Substitutions
Vinegar: You can also use white vinegar.
Customize
This is a great recipe to start small, mix, taste, and then adjust as you’d like! Want it spicer, add more cayenne. Sweeter, add more sugar. It’s easy to adjust to however you’d like it!

This looks so yummy and I’ve always wanted to try making ketchup at home but thought it’s going to be complicated. Your recipe is so easy and quick, that I’ll be trying this soon.

Homemade ketchup is the best, and once you start making your own there is no going back to the store-bought stuff. This version is so good!

Is there anything better than homemade ketchup? I made my first batch last year and fell *in love*. So much better than the sugar-packed store-bought stuff. HOWEVER. My ketchup isn’t a five minute ketchup. This is so easy and approachable. I can’t wait to give it a go!

And I hear you about effort + lots of tomatoes = not a lot of product. My ketchup recipe uses two pints of grape tomatoes but once it’s all simmered and pureed, you have one cup. That doesn’t last long, lol.

Why oh why have I not been making homemade ketchup my entire adult life? I mean, I have every single ingredient on hand at all times…and they’re everyday ingredients that cross-utilize with so many other things. What I really love about this recipe is how much salt I get to avoid when I eat gobs of ketchup on my fries. Great recipe…it’s a keeper!

Wow! I had no idea it was so easy to make ketchup! I agree with you on buying store bought tomato paste over making your own. That sounds like way too much work for little gain. Unless you have your own tomato field or something. Gotta try this out next time rather than grab that ketchup bottle! 🙂

I’m totally with you on this “mostly” from scratch item. I don’t consider buying canned tomato paste cheating. Especially when you can get it organic with BPA free cans (or even better, when you find it in glass or a tube) and without added ingredients. I buy with just organic tomato as the ingredient. Great recipe. So simple and puts me in control of the ingredients.

I have never made ketchup, but it has always intrigued me. Now I have the recipe I need to give this a try. I cannot wait to see how much better this tastes than the store-bought stuff in the bottle. I know my grandkids would LOVE this for sure.

    1. Hmmm I’m pretty sure it will shorten it’s shelf life since applesauce is only good for about a week, two max in the fridge. But, if you need a lot of ketchup for a recipe so it’ll all get used quickly, then that’s a great idea!
